Thorne was actively involved in Santa Clara County politics. While practicing law in San Jose the 1950s, Thorne ran for a California State Senate seat as a member of the Democratic Party, and later served as chair of the Santa Clara Democratic Party. He also worked closely with state and national Democratic Party figures.
