Unlike most theater production companies, Shakespeare Santa Cruz was housed within UC Santa Cruz. This unique arrangement allowed SSC to commit itself to studying the theory and practice of contemporary Shakespeare performance, inviting scholars into the production process and providing UCSC students with a window into the acting profession.

A 1997 UC wide event entitled "Pedagogy and Performance," where then new artistic director Paul Whitworth spoke regarding UCSC's unique scholarly relationship with SSC.
