1976 UCSC Documentary on Fine Arts
A 45 minute UCSC Documentary documentary on fine arts performances and interviews from the year 1976. Dance, art, music, film, photography, and theatre are represented, particularly at Kresge and Porter (College V) Colleges. Produced by Denise Gallant and edited at NBC, LA the following year, where Denise worked in the News Department as an editor. The video synthesis seen in the documentary was the first video recordings of the Synopsis Video Synthesizer, engineered by Rob Schafer. The opening sequence video was triggered (edited in real time) by the sound of scissors cutting the posters, run through the Moog Synth in the Electronic Music Studio. This project was the result of a grant through UCSC, under the guidance of Gordon Mumma, Head of the Electronic Music Studio and later head of the UCSC Music Department. Denise Gallant was Kresge Town Hall Manager during 1976, and Rob Schafer worked for Aubrey Harris at the UCSC Communication Center. Rob Schafer is presently an engineer at CBS, NY and Denise resides in Santa Cruz and has the video company, Video 4, with her husband, Kevin Monahan, who was also involved with this project.

UCSC students march in protest of Trump inauguration day, Santa Cruz 1/20/17
On my way to work. Although I fully support the action of standing up to be heard when you do not agree with something, I find it a bit ridiculous to walk down the middle of the street blocking traffic. Just my opinion. I'm sure this will be happening quite a few more times in the next day or 2. What seem to be mostly UCSC students protesting Trump and a bunch of other things on inauguration day January 20th, 2017.

Removal of a Mission Bell Marker from a campus site
On June 21, 2019, members of the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band of Native Americans, with historians and UC Santa Cruz officials, gathered for the removal of a Mission Bell Marker from a campus site where it has been since around the time the campus opened in 1965.
According to a UCSC spokesperson, the marker was installed by a women's group along Highway 101 in 1906 as a means of promoting tourism. The markers were replicas cast from the mold of an original California Mission bell.
By the mid-60's, most had been stolen. Several other women's groups removed the remaining markers and donated them to various organizations around the state. Historians have been unable to determine the name of the local group that made the UCSC donation.
CalTrans took over responsibility for the markers along the highway at the beginning of Jerry Brown's first term as governor in the mid-70's, installing new ones that were first made of concrete and later cast metal.
Native American tribes comprised of some of the descendents who lived in the area and UC officials discussed removal of the marker for more than a year.
The future of the marker has not been determined. It may be melted down to make a permanent memorial plaque or donated to a museum.
For further information on the Catholic Church's beatification and later sainthood for Father Junipero Serra, and the Native American opposition to glorification of Serra and the California Mission system, see "Serra's Miracle Nun": https://youtu.be/aRBSc7mL6cU
